13th October 2025
Western Pacific University (WPU) proudly hosted its Unity Day celebration; a vibrant cultural showcase held in honor of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary. The event held on the 12th of September 2025, brought together students, faculty, and community members in a spirited display of national pride, unity, and cultural diversity.
The highlight of the day was a series of eight traditional dance performances, representing all four regions of Papua New Guinea—Southern, Highlands, Momase, and New Guinea Islands. Each performance captivated the audience with its unique rhythms, costumes, and storytelling, offering a powerful reminder of the richness and variety of PNG’s cultural heritage vibrant amongst the WPU community.
The culmination of the event saw special musical performances by PNG music legends Basil Greg and Felix Yausi, whose timeless hits stirred nostalgia and enjoyment among attendees. Their sets were elevated by the ever-talented musicians from the Cool Range support band, who provided a dynamic musical backdrop that kept the crowd energized and dancing late into the evening.
WPU extended its heartfelt gratitude to the Office of the Prime Minister, the main sponsor of the event, whose support made the celebration possible. Their contribution underscored the importance of investing in youth, education, and cultural preservation as PNG marks this historic milestone.
Unity Day at WPU was more than just a celebration—it was a powerful expression of togetherness, resilience, and pride in Papua New Guinea’s journey over the past five decades. As the university continues to grow as a center of learning and innovation, events like these reaffirm its commitment to nurturing a generation that honors its roots while shaping the future.
